A large number of websites claim to offer ‘independent’ reviews of Hoodia products.

4. Hoodia Extracts

The term ‘extract’ causes a lot of confusion with potential users of Hoodia Gordonii.

First, let’s define ‘extract’.

An extract is the concentrated form of a herb obtained by mixing the raw herb with a solvent to dissolve and leach out the active ingredient/s. This solvent can be any number of things such as water, alcohol, or glycerine. After the certain length of time has passed, the crude herb is strained off, and the solvent  evaporated in order to concentrate the active ingredient/s.

There really is nothing wrong with using extracts – a lot of  supplements use them.

The simple fact is that most of the public are unaware of this process, but more especially they’re unaware of how some less than honest  companies manipulate the extract numbers to mislead buyers. This is how they do it.

When the Hoodia has been picked and processed, the supplying companies sell it to the manufacturers as 10:1, or 20:1 extract. That simply means that either 10 grams or 20 grams of unprocessed plant core is equal to 1 gram of processed cactus core.

Some Hoodia manufacturers put 25mg of Hoodia in to their supplement and claim that it is 500mg. Really it is 500mg of the unprocessed plant rather than the processed plant (the concentrated extract).

There are only a small number of expensive high quality Hoodia products of which Perfect Hoodia is one, which use ‘whole powder’. When they say their supplement has 400mg of Hoodia Gordonii, it really does. This processed 400mg equals 8000mg of unprocessed plant.
